Wall of Fame – The Polar Express Author Chris Van Allsburg

I’ve decided to start a regular posting of famous or at least famous to me, authors and interesting people.  With Christmas almost upon us, I thought the most fitting picture to start with would be of Chris Van Allsburg, the author the Polar Express and dozens of others amazing books.

Mr. Van Allsburg made a rare appearance at a book festival in Edgerton Wisconsin in 2010. It was the Sterling North Book Festival to be specific. The festival organizers worked long and hard to convince Mr. Van Allsburg to leave his quiet life to journey to a tiny town in southern Wisconsin. I was there as coordinator of the book sale and model train show. This was just as my writing career was about to take off.

Mr. Van Allsburg visited with hundreds of school children throughout the day. After hours of speaking, he stopped by the train show to view each collector and club’s set up. He is an avid fan of trains. He quietly wandered through the show speaking to each conductor, posing for pictures and signing an occasional book for a child. I garnered my courage to ask him for a quick picture, which he graciously granted.

The next day, the festival organizers brought in an authentic steam engine circa the late 1800’s. It was a huge attraction which brought out a couple thousand people. Mr. Van Allsburg signed books from the train depot that day for over five hours, and later gave a free talk to the public. He was a kind, fascinating man with a brilliant imagination. I’m honored to have met him and have these picture to show for it.
